Several Powershell Modules are Deprecated – Now What?

As a Microsoft Certified developer, it’s important to stay informed about the lifecycle of the technologies we use. As of March 30, 2024, Microsoft has deprecated three PowerShell modules: AzureAD, Azure AD Preview, and MSOnline. Let’s dive into the reasons behind this decision, the potential impacts, and how companies can adapt to these changes.

Why is Microsoft Discontinuing These Modules?

While these Powershell modules are deprecated, Microsoft’s decision to retire these modules is part of a broader strategy to streamline and modernize its offerings. The AzureAD, Azure AD Preview, and MSOnline modules are based on the older Azure AD Graph API, which is being phased out in favor of the more robust Microsoft Graph API. Microsoft Graph provides a unified programmability model that offers enhanced capabilities and coverage across Microsoft’s cloud services.

Potential Negative Impacts

The deprecation of these modules may pose several challenges for organizations:

Script Compatibility: Existing PowerShell scripts that rely on these modules might cease to function correctly, leading to potential disruptions in automated workflows.

Security Risks: Without ongoing updates and support, the deprecated modules could become vulnerable to security threats, compromising the integrity of IT systems.

Compliance Concerns: Companies subject to regulatory standards may find themselves non-compliant if they continue to use unsupported software.

Preparing for the Transition

To mitigate these risks and ensure a smooth transition, companies should take the following steps:

Inventory Assessment: Conduct a thorough review of all scripts and workflows that utilize the deprecated modules.

Learning and Development: Invest in training for IT staff to familiarize them with the Microsoft Graph PowerShell SDK, which will replace the retiring modules

Script Migration: Begin the process of updating or rewriting scripts to leverage the Microsoft Graph API and its associated PowerShell SDK.

Testing: Rigorously test the updated scripts in a controlled environment to ensure they perform as expected before deploying them in production.

Seek Support: Utilize Microsoft’s assistance for migrating to the Microsoft Graph PowerShell SDK, which will be the only support provided after the deprecation date.

In conclusion, while the retirement of the AzureAD, Azure AD Preview, and MSOnline PowerShell modules marks the end of an era, it also signals a move towards a more integrated and secure cloud ecosystem. By proactively preparing for these changes, companies can minimize disruption and position themselves for success in the evolving digital landscape.

What is Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic. It enables website owners to understand user interactions, visitor numbers, behavior, and traffic sources. This information is valuable for enhancing website performance, design, and user experience. Google Analytics offers various features, including real-time analytics, user tracking, and advanced reporting options, making it a popular web analytics tool. Additionally, it integrates with other Google services, such as Google AdWords and Google Search Console, providing a comprehensive view of website performance.

What is the new Google Analytics GA4

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is the latest version of Google Analytics, introduced in October 2020. It replaces the previous version, Universal Analytics, and provides advanced and integrated tracking of website and app data. Unlike Universal Analytics, GA4 is designed to be more user-friendly and intuitive, with a focus on machine learning and artificial intelligence. Key features of GA4 include:

User-centric measurement: GA4 comprehensively tracks user behavior across multiple devices and platforms.

Cross-device tracking: GA4 measures and attributes user interactions across multiple devices.

Event tracking: GA4 offers flexible and customizable event tracking for user interactions.

Machine learning: GA4 leverages machine learning for insights and recommendations.

GA4 represents a significant shift from traditional web analytics, focusing on comprehensive and integrated tracking with a machine learning and AI emphasis.

Migrating to Google Analytics GA4

Standard Universal Analytics properties will stop processing hits on July 1, 2023. It is strongly recommended to create and customize your Google Analytics 4 setup as soon as possible to collect historical data for your unique business needs.

The best setup for Google Analytics 4 involves creating a customized property tailored to your business needs. Magenium Solutions can assist in customizing your setup. The earlier this is done, the more valuable historical data will be available in Google Analytics 4, including insights for specific conversions, audiences, and other Analytics data.

If you haven’t created a new Google Analytics 4 property, the Google Setup Assistant will automatically create one for you when Standard Analytics stops processing. However, it will not be configured to meet your specific business goals or capture all the historical data needed.

Scheduling a minimum two-hour initial engagement with a Magenium Developer to review the current configuration is recommended. During this engagement, the Developer will provide advisory services, discovery, and recommendations for supporting the Google Analytics Version 4 Property update.

Service-based businesses have to learn and operate quicker than other companies. The mission may not be as challenging as it seems. In fact, we can help you break through with digital tools attuned to your exact needs. Tell us your vision — together, we will turn custom software into your business’ competitive advantage.

By using custom software application, you can modernize your systems and capture the uniqueness of your business. Custom software development that is specified for your business will help you stand out against your competitors.

Magenium has been passionate about leading the industry for over 40 years. Using the latest technology, we develop custom software development systems that enable our clients to outperform their competition.

The Advantages of This Solution

An off-the-shelf solution can appear more affordable and be faster than custom software development. Yet, this rule is not applicable to everything. There are several cases where custom software development will be more suited:

1. Uniqueness of your operations

Often, to roll-out a solution quickly and save costs, organizations try to fit an off-the-shelf system. Off-the-shelf systems promise to follow industry best practices around their unique business operations, which is the exact same thing their competitors are doing. On the contrary, we will capture the uniqueness of your business and differentiate your company in the marketplace with custom software.

2. Hidden cost of integration

Off-the-shelf software often leads to Inadequate integration. As a result, staff members have to enter information into multiple systems instead of a single product—a productivity nightmare. We will build you a custom software system that fully integrates with existing business systems.

3. The customization traps.

Most of the off-the-shelf software will not allow meaningful customization to its core functionality. Adding or subtracting too many functions will impact your business—you could end up with too many or too few functions. On the other hand, the custom software we build for you will cater exactly to your company’s needs. So, you will definitely get what you pay for.

Why Should You Consider Custom Software Development?

A software system tailored to your company’s specific needs should focus on scalability and efficiency. This will mean the difference between offering a commoditized service or a highly differentiated one at a more profitable price. Here are several ways custom software will benefit your business:

1. Increased productivity

With our custom software staff members do not have worry about collecting data from several places. Instead, productivity will rise because they can get info from one location. Our custom software will allow your team to work faster and smarter.

2. Competitive advantage

A custom system ideal for your specific business operations will help you beat out the competition in ways you never thought possible. The advantages keep coming the more you invest in the system.

3. Improve customer experience

A custom solution will help your company be more unique than others on the market. We will create a tailored portal so that you can build loyalty amongst customs and drive revenue.

During the process of owning your website, you are going to want to update it and you’ll probably want to just jump right into “fun stuff” and brainstorm ideas for new advanced features. But a successful site requires an effective and sustained marketing strategy that goes beyond just presenting a collection of images, videos, or products and services. Features and graphics should not be your starting point—you should first list your goals and objectives for the site. This might seem difficult but we at Magenium Solutions can help you by setting up your own website to make sure it has successful goals and objectives.

Your marketing goals will more likely than not differ depending on the nature of the work you do. For example, a primary goal for a business offering professional services to other companies might be to generate more leads. Conversely, a photography or art site would focus on showcasing new work or selling it online.

Where to Start

Regardless of your business, your marketing goals will differ depending on the nature of your business. For example, a primary goal for a business offering professional services to other companies might be to generate more leads. Conversely, a photography or art site would focus on showcasing new work or selling it online.

But everyone starts by determining their specific website goals and the corresponding objectives for those goals and how that will fit your overall marketing strategy and capabilities.

Here are some examples of different goals.

Sales: Your website should be generating sales and/or quality leads.

Customer Service/Interaction: Can your website offer or improve customer service or interaction.

Reducing Costs: How can your website save you money?

Brand Building: What experience do you want your visitors to have? How does it fit into your brand?

Translating Goals Into Objectives

After you figure out what your website goals and objectives are the next step is to translate them into specific and measurable objectives. This step may be more difficult for some goals depending on how tangible your goal is, and how easily you can attribute specific metrics to them. Doing so is a step we at Magenium Solutions can help you with.

Experience and expertise with analytics and other data sources are critical to finding the right solution, and sometimes specific strategies and tactics can lead to solutions you might not even think of.

Measure your success and keep building on it!

Now that you have figured out and set up your goals and objectives you should measure their success. This can be done with website analytics and search index results. If you are not familiar with analytics or other ways to measure the success of your website goal(s) we can help you with it.

If you are not sure about what goals and objectives you should set for your website, we are more than happy to help you figure that out.

Website security can be a complex and even confusing topic because of its ever-evolving landscape, for that reason, it’s important to keep in mind that security (especially website security) is never a set-it-and-forget-it solution.

Website Security

Website security can be a complex and even confusing topic because of its ever-evolving landscape, for that reason, it’s important to keep in mind that security (especially website security) is never a set-it-and-forget-it solution.

That’s why we here at Magenium Solutions encourage you to think of it as a continuous process that requires constant assessment to reduce the overall risk because nothing is more vital than keeping your website online and safe for visitors, by applying a systematic approach to website security with many layers of defense all coming together to form one piece. You need to view website security holistically and approach it with a defense-in-depth strategy.

Why is website security important?

Just as website security is ever-evolving so are hackers which is why you should stay at least one or more steps ahead of them otherwise they’ll try to exploit your website, take it offline, and impact your online presence. The impact of getting your website hacked can include financial loss, brand reputation issues, and poor search engine rankings.

What are the security risks for a website?

The main security risks of a website include vulnerable code, poor access controls, and server resource exploitation. For example, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks can make a website unavailable to visitors in a matter of minutes. A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is a non-intrusive internet attack. It is made to take down the targeted website or slow it down by flooding the network, server, or application with fake traffic.
There are a lot of reasons why websites get hacked; a weak password or outdated plugin can lead to a hacked website.

How can you tell a website is secure?

A secure website has an active web application firewall (WAF) to prevent attacks and hacks. A WAF protects your web apps by filtering, monitoring, and blocking any malicious HTTP/S traffic traveling to the web application, and prevents any unauthorized data from leaving the app.

It also follows website security best practices and has no configuration issues or known vulnerabilities. We can check if a website has a firewall, any security anomalies, malware, or if it’s blacklisted.

Do I need security for my website?

Yes absolutely! It’s not a question of if your website will get hacked, it’s when will it get hacked.

Website security is not included in most web host packages the responsibility of securing your website falls on you the website’s owner.

Security should be one of the first considerations when setting up a website, and an ongoing process of review. If your website is not secure, it can become low-hanging fruit for cybercriminals. For instance, an IT-focused website published an article about 90 of the biggest hacks and data breaches in 2020 a lot of which could have been prevented if they had better security in place.

How can I secure my website?

You can secure your website by following website security best practices, such as having a website firewall; using the latest version of the website CMS, plugins, themes, and third-party services; enforcing strong password requirements; only granting the type of access that someone needs to accomplish a task.

If you are looking for a website security partner, we would love to work with you. Let us secure your website so you can focus on what you do best.

Last year, we created a good overview of what blockchain is, and what it will eventually mean for businesses of many types. Interestingly enough, the World Bank’s perspective (perhaps the industry most likely to be impacted) is to embrace the technology fully. While blockchain hasn’t devoured the world quite yet, more and more organizations are adopting the technology to secure their transactions, reduce settlement times, and eliminate double spending.

What’s Changed Since Last Year?

For starters there are now a lot more tools available to businesses to get started with blockchain technology. Microsoft released their highly-touted Azure Blockchain Workbench which helps developers quickly create and deploy blockchain applications. This workbench enables developers to focus on defining what a contract is, instead of building the scaffolding of the application. It uses REST API’s for managing blockchain apps an users, so you can better integrate what you’re doing across your environment.

Perhaps the best thing about the Azure Blockchain Workbench is how it looks and operates. As an end user, it looks just like Microsoft Office. It’s literally the “easy button” to deploy blockchain apps.

Looking to Develop Something a bit More Complex?

Magenium’s development team now has several years of experience in developing and deploying blockchain-based applications. We’re accustomed to building these in the Azure cloud, or if you prefer, on-premises. Our blockchain apps all take advantage of the best of what makes blockchain: highly secure, decentralized, immutable transaction storage.

If you’re at the point where blockchain is on your radar, contact us below and we’ll work with you to build the solution of tomorrow.

With Houston still reeling from Hurricane Harvey and Irma currently delivering its enormous punch to Florida, the importance of business continuity and disaster recovery is painfully obvious for everyone affected. Could your business survive something like that? We shed some light on how it's done.

With Houston still reeling from Hurricane Harvey and Irma currently delivering its enormous punch to Florida, the importance of business continuity and disaster recovery is painfully obvious for everyone affected. After all it wasn’t all that long ago that if such a large storm hit your headquarters, you could expect serious disruption at the very least and possibly even the permanent closing of your business.

While the buildings themselves are often left standing, the associated flooding destroys servers and the PCs of workers. Customer data, financial data, payroll – everything wiped out in a day.

Mitigate Catastrophic Risk

OK, so your business doesn’t live in a flood plain, or along a seaboard where hurricanes happen. Building fires are still a risk we all face – so it’s best to be as prepared as you can without breaking the bank.

These days your business can plan for such catastrophes without enormous cost or complexity using technology from Microsoft. When Magenium performs major application deployments for our clients, we use the best practices of cloud computing to ensure our clients can survive a catastrophe like a hurricane or a building fire.

One technique is to replicate workloads across Microsoft Azure regional pairs. This takes advantage of Azure’s geographical isolation and availability policies. If a data center in the South goes down the Northern pair takes over and mission-critical applications never suffer an outage. Business goes on as usual even if catastrophe hits.

With the way Microsoft has designed regions, each pair resides within the same geography to remain compliant with any data residency requirements you might face.

Don't Forget Your PC!

While keeping your infrastructure up and running is critical to business continuity in the face of a disaster, it is equally important to make sure your workers can access their files, workflows, and keep the day to day operations floating.

That’s why we always recommend Microsoft’s Office 365. Even if the worst case happens, everyone will still be able to access the files they need on a remote PC – and keep performing their work no matter where they are.

How Can I Get Started?

If you’re looking to reduce the risk that catastrophic events pose, take a look at our Azure Running start today and learn how to migrate critical applications to the cloud. For help on any of your technology needs you can always contact us below.

SEO and SEM are massive topics to tackle. But as an SMB, there are simple things you can do to make SEO and SEM work for you.

As a small or medium-sized business, you’ve likely seen the letters SEO and SEM before. What do they mean for your business? How can those concepts work for you?

First, search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM) are massive topics. People have entire jobs focused on just these topics. However, taking simple steps can help your business search results mutiply. These easy tactics can help your digital marketing succeed.

Make your website SEO friendly. When was your website designed? If your website was created years ago, and hasn’t been touched since, it might not be SEO friendly. Google changes its rules and algorithms often. You need a site that knows the rules and plays by them. (However, keep in mind that Google isn’t the only search engine in town. Plan for other engines too.)

Master long tail keywords. Think about search terms people use to find you for help figuring out the right keywords, use Google AdWords Keyword Planner. This tool generates keyword ideas, shows stats for certain keywords, and gives insight into how keywords will perform. Your goal should be long tail keywords. These are specific phrases and search terms that apply only to you or a handful of other businesses. For example, enter “Microsoft partner Glen Ellyn, IL” into search engines and Magenium pops up first.

Keyword stuffing is not a thing. Keyword stuffing is repeating keywords constantly hoping to rank higher in search. It was used in the early days of SEO when gaming Google rankings was easy. Gaming search is no longer an option. In fact, Google penalizes pages that do this.

Keep it fresh. Google and other search engines reward new, relevant content. They use bots to crawl your site looking for new stuff. The more new stuff you have, the more your site is crawled, and the more content the engines will index. Your website is a living entity. You need to feed it regularly to keep it alive and healthy.

Keeping ahead of your digital marketing is essential for the lifeblood of your business. IT, from infrastructure to apps, is also essential. Magenium empowers our customers to gain a competitive edge in IT by identifying where they should be connected. If you need help with your IT solutions, call us toll-free at +1(630)-786-5900 or contact us to discuss how Magenium can help you keep your competitive edge.

If you could ask your customers what they think of your company products or services, would you use the information to make your company better?

Social media has democratized criticism. For good or bad, anyone anywhere can comment on anything. They can also quickly gain an audience that will listen.

If your business is active online, you’ve probably experienced this firsthand. You can elicit opinions about your business from anyone with a smartphone.

Some businesses like to shy away from this immediacy and connection. Others, however, embrace social feedback and use it to make their business better. How can you do the same?

Never ignore it. It’s called social media for a reason. Most people reach out to a business to get a response or start a conversation. Respond as quickly as you can, even if it’s to simply acknowledge the comment. If there’s a problem, most people don’t expect a quick solution. Their first goal is to know they’ve been heard.

Embrace the negative. Maybe “embrace” is too strong of a word. But at least listen and learn from it. Is customer service getting the same question over and over? If yes, can you add content to your site that answers common questions or problems? This helps customers self-serve their answers and lightens the load of your support team. Are there frequent complaints about a step in your buying process? Review your process and make it better. Do customers make wish lists? In other words, do they say what they wish your product did or what they wish your company offered? These comments provide insight into new products and upgrades you should consider.

Celebrate the positive. Social media isn’t always about the negative. If you receive kudos on social media, send out thanks. Take every opportunity to let your customers how much you appreciate them.

Keep it real. Your customers can spot auto-DMs and bot-tweets a mile away. They want to know there’s a real person operating behind your brand. It’s fine to automate some of your social media interactions, but real connections matter. Take the time to engage your audience

Social feedback between you and your customers is an essential part of today’s business communication plan. Yet, it’s just as important inside your enterprise. These same principles apply to enterprise social.

Start conversations, collaborate on projects, talk in real time. If you haven't yet incorporated enterprise social into your business, contact us at Magenium. We can get your started on the social path today. Please contact us or call +1 (630) 786-5900.
