Microsoft announced on July 6th of this year that they will retire SharePoint 2010 workflows in all Office 365 Tenants.
- Starting August 1st, 2020, SharePoint 2010 workflows will be turned off for newly created tenants.
- Starting November 1st, 2020, Microsoft will begin to remove the ability to run or create SharePoint 2010 workflows from existing tenants.
SharePoint 2013 workflows will continue to be supported but on Nov 1st, 2020 but the SharePoint 2013 workflow engine will be deactivated for new tenants. Microsoft will provide a PowerShell script to reactivate the SharePoint 2013 engine for new environments as needed. Note that SharePoint 2013 workflows will be deprecated in the future so creating workflows using the 2013 workflow engine is not recommended.
What Does this Mean for SharePoint Customers?
After November 1, 2020, all workflows based upon the SharePoint 2010 workflow engine will be deactivated including built in SP workflows such as:
- Collect Feedback
- Collect Signatures
- Classic SharePoint Publishing Page Approvals
Many organizations are still leveraging these built-in workflows (especially for approvals) as they were easily migrated and supported from their existing on-premises farm to Office 365.
